would I like more things for being a veteran player? Yes

do I need more things? No

I am 50/50 with this idea. It would be cool if veterans got more rewards for sticking with the game for as long as they did but Anet does need to attract new people, and from the buisness perspective that is more important to them.

Well if someone that's never played before sees a reward they think would be cool; then they can go run off and buy GW so they can start working towards that reward.

Hmm... Not anything interesting to me. If i really felt like veterans needed charity id go pass out 10k to veterans in kaineng or something. I have to say since the start of gw to now ive become so amazingly rich its not to funny. I have black 15k on all 6 of my pve characters. My war has about 13 greens on him alone plus some good golds.(vampiric plagueborn sword of fortitude perfect and vampiric golden maul of fortitude perfect) My monk has about 8 greens on him including a green shield for -nrg focus swap. My necro has 3 greens but thats all she really needs. My ranger has 5 greens 1 greens staff for trapping and a VERA for thumper... (soon to have green daggers for reapeating build) My ele has about 5 or 6 greens also. My rit has 4 greens. And my pvp is decked out with all weapon mods and runes possible plus all monk, ranger, and war skills unlocked.

See im a SEASONED veteran. I gave away both my minipets to a race in my guild hall. If u think i need charity then thats just nuts. I have more experience and more stuff. Ive been playing for 15 months. My stuff overpowers any shit anet could possibly give me other than new mods and stuff. Im equiped for all occasions and have beaten both games over 10 times. I have elite skills new players wont get unless they buy the old games. I think if u wanted rewards for being veterans u already have them... experience and equipment.

I believe they put the birthday gift items in place for specifically that reason.

A new player is already going to be far behind in progress compared to players who have been playing from the start, have unlocked hundreds of skills on all classes, and probably beaten both Prophecies and Factions with at least one character or another. The truth is, a "head start" kit for brand new players is a good idea, expecially for a game which doesn't agree with dispensing advantages to "hardcore" players. These bonus items are not that significant, and most exsisting players will have equal or better weapons so far anyhow, I say it is a great ploy.

The only thing I don't like about these systems is that they are exclusive items, which many players may like and would enjoy, and there is no other way to get them than buying another copy, which is definetly out of the question for rational gamers. I personally have more grief over the CE additions, I would like to gain access to some of the small glimmer and mostly Kunnavang pet, but I will not buy an entirely new copy of the game for it, I really think Anet needs to use that shop for something worth wile, and offer 10 dollar upgrades to CE version for each chapter, allowing us to access all the in game perks.

In response to the OP

/signed for veteran rewards, if it is carefully done to make it just that, A Veteran Reward.
--------------------------------------------------
If anyone remembers, Ultima Online had a great reward system. After every year, you were able to pick from a list of collectable items. Depending on the actual number of years you had actually played, the items to choose from were different. So, that if 2 people had accounts, but one had been created exactly one year after the other, then on the anniversary of these accounts, the older account would have a different list of items available, usually cooler, bigger things to put in the player owned house or special dye colors etc.. I think this was great, and looking at GW, it would fit in very well, although seeing as how their is no player housing, rewards would have to be different.
---------------------------------------------------
Birthday presents were a great addition. Thinking about it now, the only thing I would change, is having them all have the same % of rarity. Since they are not customized I don't think rarity should be an issue. Birthday presents are cool, but they aren't actually an incentive to maintain a "veteran" status.
---------------------------------------------------
Which brings me to my next point. When you create an account, it's there for good. Your not paying monthly fee's so there is no need to close your account, thus making people able to "not" play for years or more, and then come back and still having their account say 36 months old, or whatever while not actually having played. If time played could be included along with account age, then I'd think the Veteran status could be kept honest.
---------------------------------------------------
My final note would be rarity. To be truly veteran rewards, these items need to be either customized, or they need to be something like, unique emotes to the account. Veteran rewards won't mean jack if they can just be bought and sold by whomever until a brand new account ends up with a 8 year veteran reward.
---------------------------------------------------
FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO DON'T LIKE TO READ ALOT--these are the points I made.

1. Ultima Online Account reward systems. Great Idea, would work well with GW. If you don't know about it, it's explained in 1st paragraph.

2. Mini Pets are great birthday presents, but because they aren't customized, cannot really be considered veteran rewards because anybody can buy them.

3. Account Age combined with some sort of required account activity, because people who are inactive over 3 years, should not be considered veterans when they come back.

4. If implemented, Veteran Rewards MUST be customized, or it is no longer a Reward, just a money sink.

Thank you for your time, and I appologize if I offended anyone.

P.S. I suppose I will make a response to people who say that they don't need to offer stuff to veteran players. BULL CRAP In guild wars, veteran players are just as important as new players because there are no monthly fees. It doesn't matter if someone already has guild wars or not, because A-Nets funding comes from selling new chapters, which will be bought by new and old alike. I agree that offering cool new items in older chapters could bring in new players more easily, and possibly sucker in old players to buy it just for those items, but either way, Old and New players are equal in the whole scheme of things.

And to those that say veteran rewards are not needed, well perhaps not, but neither are birthday presents. It's just something to make people want to keep playing other than for new chapters. I guess i'd put it as, it's A-Nets way of saying Thank You for still playing our game.

Try to think about it this way:

You've bought the game before GOTY edition came out = You've been able to use Anet's server and service for LONGER than those who've bought the game later, or just bought GOTY edition. That's the benefit for you.

Veterans of Guild Wars, I imagine, have a nice collection of fancy, sparkly items, that would make any GOTY item look paltry. The skins may be nifty, but that's about it. And when you are battling, do you wonder how spiffy your axe, focus, bow, staff, etc... looks like? These items are probably a way for new players to have decent items and not need to worry about max-this or max-that, rather, enjoy the game.

If you want to suggest some sort of reward for Veterans, why not give them a Title? Such as 'Veteran'. Or 'Experienced X' where 'X' is replaced with your class. Though I would recommend tying that title to character age, not account age. I doubt there are many people constantly redoing all their characters.

Bottom line? Great, the GOTY players have more stuff to fill their storage.

By being a veteran, you have been able to play through events that have fattened your purse, extended your list of available skills, and allowed you to either purchase items for less than they cost now or sell them for much more than they cost now.

Let them have some items that will let them enjoy the game without being jealous. I'd bet you already have plenty of items they will have to wait a year or more to even have a chance of seeing on their characters

EDIT: looks like Esprit beat me to it since I had to work before posting this

Bad points imo...the newbs had the chance to purchase the game back during the early months like we did they choose not. Their choice cost them.

I don't agree with "veterans" getting stuff just because they have played for however long.
Give me a break....what's next, are you going to want a 10k a week pension for playing for 2 years?

The point is this....Anet is first and foremost a BUSINESS.
The GOTY edition was released, not to reward new players, but to build excitement around the game winning a prestigious award.
Which in turn will equate to more sales.
Liken it to car commercials that tout the JD Power Award.
Car Commercial = "Buy our car, we won truck/car of the year from JD Power"
Anet = "Buy GW, it won Game of The Year"
Yeah yeah, so car companies don't give anything extra...but the pricipal is the same.

Me personally, I would not call my self a veteran (started playing in late February early March) and I have seen people with santa hats & pumpkin heads and other things. I, as a "new" player could not get any of those items, but you "veterans" sure have them and enjoy them.

So the GOTY has some nifty skins...they don't have great stats and there are weapons currently available that are comparable if not better.

It's like the 2 year old who has 3 lollipops, but sees his 1 year old sister with a nice red lollipop. He crys and yells and screams at his parents until he gets the red one to go with his other 3.

Hi,

This is to all the people who keep saying Character age and not account!

I have restarted all my characters and beat BOTH games "tyria - 20 times" and "cantha - 12 times". I acually got bored of guild wars after the 16th time and took a 2 week break. Otherwise i have played this straight! I had to restart all my characters to do this.

I dont think its fair that its based on character age. I was creative and went through it again by remaking everything from scratch!

I don't see why it's even an issue. Seriously. Why complain about something that doesn't affect the game at all?

If you've been playing for over a year, you get a free pet. Some of which are worth over 100k.

If you're just starting out, you get some really crappy free items and a couple decent ones.

The Shield, Hammer, and Bow are the only good items. The other caster types are total junk. A Curse Req staff with Blood and Death attributes? No thanks.

I have the GoTY edition, btw. I absolutely love it for two very simple facts: 1. It was only 39.99, 10 dollars less than the regular version that comes with nothing extra. 2. The Nevermoore bow looks awesome and I ALWAYS get "omg what kind of bow is that?????" from people.

It makes veterans feel like little kids when they see it, because they think it's totally rare and some of them are willing to pay out the ear for an item I can't even put in the trade window, lol
